A diplomatic stir erupted at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Wednesday after the United States Ambassador to the UN, Ambassador Waltz, reportedly blocked Nigerian career diplomats from attending an event featuring American rapper Nicki Minaj, citing concerns linked to what he described as “alleged Christian genocide.”
Sources within the Nigerian Mission to the UN disclosed that representatives were earlier notified about the high-profile event but were later specifically informed that they were not on the invitation list. The decision, which came without prior explanation, left members of Nigeria’s delegation stunned.
According to officials familiar with the development, the exclusion was communicated shortly before the event began. Diplomats described the situation as “unusual” and “unprecedented,” especially given that Nigeria maintains active engagement in UN cultural, diplomatic, and interfaith initiatives.
“It was clear we were being barred. We were told plainly that Nigerian representatives were not invited,” a senior diplomat said, requesting anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue.
Ambassador Waltz, whose office has recently raised concerns at the UN over reports of religious persecution in parts of Africa, is said to have justified the restriction on the basis of what he referred to as “ongoing investigations into alleged Christian genocide.” However, no formal statement has been released by the U.S. Mission as of press time.
The move has sparked quiet but growing diplomatic questioning among African delegations at the UN, many of whom are seeking clarity on whether the exclusion signals a shift in U.S. diplomatic posture toward Nigeria.
The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is expected to seek an official explanation from Washington in the coming days.
As the controversy unfolds, observers note that blending high-profile entertainment with sensitive geopolitical concerns could deepen diplomatic fault lines at a time when cooperation within the UN remains crucial.
This is a developing story.
