U.S. Lawmakers Condemn Trump’s Threat to Launch Military Action Against Nigeria

Two influential members of the United States Congress, Gregory W. Meeks and Sara Jacobs, have strongly condemned former President Donald Trump’s recent remarks threatening to cut off U.S. aid and possibly take military action against Nigeria.

In a joint statement released in Washington D.C., the lawmakers described Trump’s comments as “reckless, dangerous, and deeply irresponsible,” emphasizing that such threats could undermine decades of diplomatic relations and cooperation between both nations.

Rep. Meeks, who serves as the Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said the United States must focus on strengthening democratic governance and economic development in Nigeria rather than resorting to threats. “Nigeria is one of America’s most important partners in Africa. Any suggestion of military intervention or aid suspension is counterproductive and risks destabilizing the region,” he stated.

Rep. Sara Jacobs, a member of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, echoed Meeks’ concerns, noting that Trump’s rhetoric could damage America’s credibility across the continent. “Threatening a key African ally undermines our shared values of democracy, peace, and mutual respect. The U.S. must engage Nigeria through diplomacy, not intimidation,” Jacobs said.

The lawmakers called on the Biden administration and Congress to reaffirm America’s commitment to its longstanding partnership with Nigeria, stressing the importance of collaboration in areas such as security, health, and economic growth.

Their condemnation follows widespread backlash from Nigerian officials, civil society groups, and international observers who viewed Trump’s statements as an affront to Nigeria’s sovereignty.

Observers say the rebuke from Meeks and Jacobs signals growing bipartisan concern over the potential impact of Trump’s foreign policy rhetoric on U.S.-Africa relations.
