Ryan Seacrest’s Father, Gary Seacrest, Dies at 79 After Battle With Prostate Cancer

The entertainment world has joined Ryan Seacrest in mourning the passing of his father, Gary Lee Seacrest, who died at the age of 79 after a long and courageous battle with prostate cancer. The news was confirmed by Ryan in a heartfelt post on social media, where he paid tribute to his father’s enduring strength, wisdom, and love.

Gary Seacrest, a former U.S. Army major and real estate lawyer, had been battling prostate cancer for several years. According to reports, his health began to decline in mid-2025 when the cancer metastasized to other parts of his body. Despite multiple rounds of chemotherapy and other treatments, his condition worsened. During this period, Gary developed pneumonia, a common complication in cancer patients whose immune systems have been severely weakened by chemotherapy.

Ryan, who has always spoken lovingly of his parents, opened up earlier in the year about his father’s health struggles during a tearful episode of American Idol. He revealed that he received distressing news during a live broadcast that his father had been admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) after complications arose from his illness. “It was one of the hardest moments of my life,” Ryan recalled. “To be on air while knowing my dad was fighting for his life was something I’ll never forget.”

Doctors reportedly recommended emergency surgery in an attempt to stabilize Gary’s condition. However, after much discussion with his family, Gary decided to decline further invasive procedures, opting instead for comfort care. “He didn’t want to spend his final days in pain or hooked up to machines,” a close family friend revealed. “He wanted peace, surrounded by the people he loved most.”

Gary’s final days were spent at home in Los Angeles, where he was cared for by his wife, Connie Seacrest, and his son Ryan. Sources close to the family said he remained alert and positive until the end, often sharing stories and laughter despite his weakening body.

In his statement, Ryan Seacrest described his father as “a devoted husband, a proud grandfather, and the best role model I could have ever asked for.” He continued, “My dad taught me everything about hard work, humility, and kindness. He faced life with courage and faith, and even in his toughest moments, he never lost his smile.”

Fans and colleagues have flooded social media with messages of sympathy, praising Ryan for his grace and strength during such a painful time. Many of Ryan’s longtime friends from American Idol and Live with Kelly and Ryan shared their condolences, describing Gary as “a remarkable man who raised an extraordinary son.”

Gary Seacrest is survived by his wife Connie, his son Ryan, and other family members. Funeral arrangements are expected to be private, with a memorial service planned for a later date.

“Dad passed peacefully, free of pain and surrounded by love,” Ryan wrote. “He will forever be my hero and my guiding light.”
