From ₦1,500 to Nightmare: How a Pastor’s Betrayal Shattered an Ogun Family
What began as a simple quest for ₦1,500 — the price of a school textbook — spiraled into a tragedy that changed one young girl’s life forever. In Atan, Ogun State, a family’s trust in their pastor turned into heartbreak, betrayal, and a struggle for justice that continues to haunt them.
When NewsPilotNG visited the family’s former home in Atan, the once-lively compound stood eerily quiet. Beside it sat Christ Apostolic Church, Land of Mercy — the small worship centre that doubled as Pastor Oluwole Jonathan’s apartment. Now abandoned, its locked doors and dusty walls hide memories of pain and betrayal.
Neighbours say the family fled to Ifo, Ogun State, seeking peace from both stigma and “strange occurrences” said to have followed the teenage victim after the incident.
‘He Drugged Me,’ Girl Recounts
At their new residence in Ifo, the teenage survivor spoke in a trembling voice. “It happened on a Tuesday,” she began. “I was sent home to collect ₦1,500 for my textbook. Pastor came and asked why I wasn’t in school. I told him I needed money for my book.”
She hesitated before continuing. “He said I should come inside, gave me medicine, and told me to take it. I refused at first, but he said, ‘Am I a stranger to you?’ After I drank it, I slept off. When I woke up, I saw blood in my private part. He told me not to tell anyone or I would die.”
The young girl kept silent for months until her health began to fail. Her mother thought it was fever — until a pregnancy test confirmed the unthinkable.
Mother’s Pain, Father’s Rage
“I felt my world collapse,” her mother recalled, fighting tears. “When the doctor said she was five months pregnant, I almost fainted. People called me a bad mother. I cried every night.”
Her husband added quietly, “The man who did this wasn’t just our neighbour; he was our pastor. His wife was even my wife’s friend.”
The case was reported to the community leaders and then to the police. DNA results later confirmed Pastor Jonathan as the father. With the support of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) and the Spring Centre, the family pursued justice.
In January 2025, the High Court in Ilaro found Pastor Jonathan guilty of defilement and sentenced him to 21 years in prison.
After Justice, the Struggle to Heal
But even with the verdict, peace has been elusive. The teenager’s return to school was marred by trauma — frequent absences and emotional breakdowns. “Sometimes, she says she hears voices telling her to leave school,” her mother said. To keep her safe, she now learns tailoring near home, under her mother’s watchful eye.
A Call for Accountability
With Nigeria’s Senate pushing for life imprisonment for child defilement, advocates hope for a future where predators think twice before violating a child’s innocence.
For this Ogun family, justice may have been served — but the journey toward healing has only just begun.
