PDP Bayelsa Accepts Governor Douye Diri’s ResignationThe Bayelsa State Working Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has formally accepted the resignation of Governor Douye Diri, members of the State House of Assembly, and other party stalwarts who recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement signed by the Acting State Publicity Secretary, Alasuote Wright Derri, the party described the development as unfortunate but acknowledged the constitutional right of the governor and others to associate freely.
The statement noted that the announcement of the governor’s resignation was made at the Executive Council Chambers of the Government House in Yenagoa, in the presence of the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, several lawmakers, and some PDP stakeholders.
Following an emergency meeting to review the situation, the caretaker committee said it would continue to uphold the legacy of the PDP in Bayelsa State, assuring members and supporters that the party remains strong and united despite the recent setback.
“This dark day in our history reminds us of the sacrifices of our heroes past and present who built the PDP as a true Ijaw party,” the statement read. “From the late Chief DSP Alamieyesegha to Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, Chief Timipre Sylva, Henry Seriake Dickson, and Douye Diri, each contributed to the growth of our great party. Sadly, today’s events have cast a shadow over those efforts.”
The committee expressed optimism that the PDP would regain control of the state by 2027, declaring that “Bayelsa is a covenant PDP state.”
“Despite previous attempts by federal forces to wrest control of the state in 2019, God restored it to us. That same God will do it again,” the statement affirmed.
The party pledged its commitment to rebuilding under Acting Chairman George Turnah and urged all members to remain steadfast and united.
“The PDP will continue to defend, protect, and rebuild our structures across the state. We will stay focused on our mission to serve the people of Bayelsa and the Ijaw nation,” the statement concluded.
